- Description:
- The Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Helsinki uses electron antiparticles, positrons, for basic materials physics research. Positrons are antimatter, which must be separately produced for use at the exact moment when the research is being carried out. Currently The accelerator laboratory uses positron sources based on radioactive radiation sources, the use of which has problems: 1) The source cannot be switched off when it is not needed, in which case the source causes a constant radiation risk. 2) Technical the solution related to the production of energy-controlled positrons with a radioactive source is ineffective, in which case the activity of the radiation source used must be very high, which increases both the continuous and operational radiation risk. in order to reduce the risks caused by radiation, the University of Helsinki will switch to using an electronic positron generator, the use of which is not based on radioactive radiation sources. In addition, energy-controlled positrons are obtained from the electric positron generator at a higher frequency than is possible with current technical solutions, which makes research more efficient. Currently, only one company in the world manufactures electric positron generators, Posithôt, the company that developed and patented the generator technology (Sceaux, France). The purchase comes with a 5-year maintenance contract, which can only be obtained from Posithôt, as no other supplier knows the details of the device's operation.
