• Light pollution is a growing environmental challenge, the amount of which increases globally by about 2% per year based on satellite observations and, according to citizen observations, up to close to 10% per year (Lyytimäki, SYKE). At the same time, the power and amount of lighting have increased with the development of technology, which has led to ill-considered over-lighting and unnecessary energy consumption. Outdoor lighting is often necessary from the point of view of safety and accessibility, but sometimes it is used without consideration at the wrong time, in the wrong place, or poorly directed, or it can be perceived as disturbing. In this case, we can talk about light pollution or harmful light. Light pollution affects the functioning of nature (animals, insects, plants), human well-being and health and to the visibility and experience of cultural and nature experiences such as the starry sky and northern lights. At the level of the European Union, there is still no uniform regulation or directive on light pollution and its control, but the related preparation and policy recommendations are made in several different projects. In its operations, Sodankylä municipality aims for a balance with nature in all seasons and a transition towards a more sustainable future that safeguards the diversity of nature and people well-being. In order to promote this goal, the municipality also aims to take an active role in reducing light pollution and developing sustainable light management, so that the preservation of natural darkness can also be secured in the future...
